DENSO: An Environmental Leader

Environmental preservation and harmony with society - is one of DENSO's four Management Philosophies. More than just words, this statement is the common ground for which DENSO bases its environmental programs. In a time when getting by is not good enough, we strive to be more than being "Committed to the Environment" or a "Corporate Steward" - We endeavor to be a true environmental leader.

Our Environmental Policy

It is the policy of DENSO MANUFACTURING MICHIGAN, INC. (DMMI) to conduct its business in a manner that is consistent with environmental preservation and harmony with society. To implement this policy, DMMI commits to the following principles:

DMMI will …

  • operate as an environmentally responsible corporate citizen;

  • seek to prevent pollution and

  • ensure that its operations comply with relevant environmental laws and regulations and other related environmental obligations;

  • implement an environmental management system which includes objectives and targets, periodic review, and a commitment to continuous improvement; and

  • communicate this policy to all DMMI associates and make it available to others upon request.

DMMI's Programs

In developing our programs, there are several key tenants which serve as the pillars for all of our activities. These are:

  • Compliance
  • Conformance
  • Community

Further incorporated into these tenants are two philosophies of action, which are Continual Improvement and Conservation.
  • Compliance

Compliance is the single most important function of our environmental activities. This responsibility is drawn from the desires of our citizens, neighbors and society.

Within this context, DENSO has provided the resources to evaluate our regulatory obligations and develop systems to achieve and regularly monitor these requirements. These activities extend beyond our facility into our corporate programs and culture.

A consistent record of environmental regulation compliance, along with MBP3 and ISO 14001 certification, earned DMMI the title of Clean Corporate Citizen (C3), from the State of Michigan. DMMI is also a charter member of EPA's National Performance Achievement Track since 2000. These designations place DMMI in the elite rankings of environmentally conscious Michigan companies.

DMMI has also joined the Michigan Business Pollution Prevention Partnership (MBP3) to demonstrate our commitment to pollution prevention and our goals in waste-reduction.

More details on these programs are available by following the links at the end of this section.

  • Conformance

Conformance is the critical environmental function regarding the management of our system and activities. Commonly, this relates to the implementation and achievement of ISO 14001 or some other environmental management system (EMS). However, long before the advent of ISO 14001, DMMI had implemented its own form of an EMS, emphasizing environmental planning, top management involvement and continual improvement.

DMMI voluntarily achieved ISO 14001 certification in 1998, an international environmental standard that requires us to continuously improve our impact on the natural world around us.
  • Community

Our environmental responsibility goes beyond products and processes. As such, we are involved in a variety of local activities to extend the spirit of preservation and harmony to our community.

Since 1998, Denso has sponsored a volunteer Wildlife and Conservation Committee. Thanks to associates on this committee, a Michigan native wildflower garden brings colorful blooms and butterflies to a carefully tended piece of land on our grounds. Other community events in which the committee participates include: Earth Day Celebrations, Clean-up Activities at a local state park and supporting local Household Hazardous Waste Cleanups.

Our facility sits on beneficial nesting habitat for the bluebird population, which is rebounding thanks in part to nestbox programs like ours.

Additionally, staff members regularly serve on a variety of local boards and advisory committees, where their environmental knowledge and experiences can be shared for the benefit of our neighbors.

Eco – Vision

DENSO Corporation has endeavored to develop and release a series of global environmental targets. These targets are both strategic and multi-media in nature.

Eco-Vision 2005 was developed to achieve a number of environmental and stewardship improvements. The program is a 5 year program, to be completed in 2005. Superceding Eco-Vision 2005 will be Eco-Vision 2015. Eco-Vision 2015 will be released in late 2005 or early 2006.

While the Eco-Vision programs are too expansive to list here, links to the related sites are given below.
